WATERFORD — Police in Waterford are offering their parking lot as a Craigslist “safety zone.” The department post on their Facebook page Tuesday to notify people.

“Many of us use Craigslist to buy and sell items. Many of us have also heard horrific stories of people hurt in Craigslist sales,” the post said. “Far more commonly, items are sold that the purchaser may fear is stolen or just don’t feel right about the sale.”

Officers say you can use their lobby or the parking lot to conduct the transaction.

“These areas are constantly monitored by video, and we save our security camera recordings for 30 days,” the post continues.

The post notes that most people who are trying to conduct a “shady” business transaction, probably wouldn’t agree to do so at the police department.

“We won’t take part in the transaction, that’s up to you,” the post said.

If you’d like to check on the possibility that an item is stolen, officers suggest using sites like Trace Checker.

A woman commented on the post, asking if she too could use the parking lot even though she lives in Salem.

“We’d never turn you away Ma’am,” they replied.

Earlier this month, a Hartford pastor was beaten and robbed in front of his children while trying to make a transaction setup via Craigslist.
