PLAINVILLE — A Plainville woman is facing assault and animal cruelty charges after police say she kicked a Chihuahua and pushed the dogs owner to the ground.

On October 23, around 6 p.m. Plainville officers responded to an apartment complex on East Street. A 62-year-old woman said she was home alone when she heard a knock at her back door. She opened it and saw a woman she did not know. That woman was later identified as Lynn Mansfield, 56, of Plainville.

As the woman opened the door, her Chihuahua got loose and ran outside. That’s when, police say, Mansfield proceeded to kick the dog. Then, she pushed the woman to the ground, grabbed her arm, and closed it in the door. The resident was able to get away and run to a neighbor’s home for help.

Police say they found Mansfield a short distance away and she was incoherent. Officers say she opened the door to the K9 sergeant’s cruiser and said she wanted the police dog to be free. Officers had to physically restrain her when she tried to open the door again, police said.

The woman suffered from a sprained wrist and several bruises on her arm and shoulder. The dog is going to be ok.

Mansfield is charged with assault of  a victim over 60, assault in the 3rd degree, cruelty to animals, interfering with an officer, and breach of peace. She was released on a $10,000 bond and she is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on November 23.
