BLOOMFIELD-- An industrial section of Bloomfield may be getting another distribution center. Already home to distribution centers for HomeGoods, Home Depot and Pepperidge Farm, a new player may be coming to town: Trader Joe's.
The town is a top pick for a brand new, multi-million dollar Trader Joe's distribution center. But it's not a done deal. Another site in New York is also being considered for the $78 million center.
It's expected to bring 700 jobs to the area if it does end up in Bloomfield.
Jose Giner, Bloomfield's director of planning and economic development, said, "The key word is we're in the running."
Giner believes his town is the right pick.
"If they're going to be serving their New York and Massachusetts markets, then Connecticut--we're right in the middle. I think Bloomfield certainly has had a good history of being open to quality development," Giner said.
The town has offered tax incentives in the past to lure big projects. In this case, Trader Joe's is seeking a 100 percent property tax abatement for seven years.
"They still have to submit plans if they choose us go before planning and zoning," Giner said.
The Trader Joe's distribution center would build on Phoenix crossing in a new industrial subdivision going into a currently-vacant farm field.
Bloomfield residents are excited about the prospect.
"It's gonna sell healthy stuff a farm land is used to grow healthy stuff so I believe that giving up a piece of farmland for Trader Joe's is good, it would be good for us," said Carl Carpenter, a Bloomfield resident.
Soidonnie Chambers, who owns Sweet Delight, said, "It helps the community, and I guess I will get more customers here."
On December 12 there will be a Town Council meeting where they'll make a public presentation for everyone to learn more about Trader Joe's and the possible deal .It will be open to the public, and is being held at the Council Chambers here at Town Hall.
If an application is submitted by the end of the year, a decision could be made by the council in January for land use.
