CHESHIRE – According to Rudy Demiraj, a State Correction Officer and President of AFSCME Local 387, a 20 year old inmate at Manson Youth Institution violently assaulted a State Correction Officer on Wednesday, March 11.

The officer was hospitalized and then released.  The marks the second inmate-on-staff assault to take place in one region in the last six months, as last October an officer was stabbed in the neck while another was hurt responding to the assault at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.

In his statement, Demiraj goes on to say that “This latest attack only reinforces our longstanding concerns over safety, staffing and security within Connecticut’s prisons. We are asking the Department of Correction, state legislators and Governor Malloy not just to listen to our concerns, but to take action to better protect public safety.
