SUFFIELD—A renewed warning at an old quarry in Suffield asks visitors to keep off and stay out.

The quarry, at the end of Mountain Road, is owned by Tilcon Roncari, so it’s still private property. But police say plenty of people, mostly teens, continue to trespass by hiking the path up to the rocks. Police say the hikers then leave their mark on the rock face with graffiti.

There have been three emergency calls at the quarry in just a month, which police said is more than usual.

“I think once the first tag went up on the rock face it became kind of a competition of who could go higher and further and draw something bigger,” Suffield Police Lt. Richard Brown said.

Police said the rock face is unstable since it’s mostly brittle shale and can easily give way to added weight. That has led to serious injuries, as well as one to two rescues per year.

Police said the last death at the quarry happened about 15 years ago.
