SOUTHINGTON – A head-on crash closed I-84 Westbound near Exit 31 Thursday. The three- vehicle crash happened just after 9 a.m. on 84 West, near exit 30.
A 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Joanna McCarthy of Waterbury was heading east on 84 just past exit 30. A 2011 Dodge Ram, driven by David Elward of Nebraska and a FedEx tractor-trailer truck driven by John Knowlton of Southwick, Mass., were heading west when McCarthy went across the median into 84 West and hit Elward head-on. Upon impact, Elward ‘s pickup was rear-ended by the Knowlton’s truck.
Lifestar was called to the scene and took McCarthy to Hartford Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. Elward was taken to Hartford Hospital by ambulance and Knowlton didn’t have any injuries.
The highway reopened around 1:30 p.m.
Drivers were stuck in traffic for hours and were detoured off the highway, in some cases on-by-one, while crews worked to investigate the crash.
