Fatal Burlington crash

BURLINGTON — A fatal crash closed Route 4 just west of the intersection with Route 179 in Burlington Thursday afternoon. The road remained closed for several hours, but reopened Thursday night.

Police say a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Eileen Shannon, 57, of Torrington, was driving west on Route 4 when it crossed the center line and hit a dump truck driven by Thomas Larson, 29, of Old Lyme. The dump truck overturned, and the fuel tank ruptured.

DEPP responded to the scene to clean up the fuel spill.

Shannon was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other woman and a 4-year-old boy were taken to the hospital by ambulance. It’s not clear how severe the women’s injuries were, but the boy was said to have minor injuries.

There were two passengers in the dump truck, one of whom had a minor injury and was taken to the hospital.
