The great outdoors has much to offer in Connecticut, including sport fishing--even spearfishing.

A recreation popularized in warmer waters, including Florida and the Caribbean, spearfishing also exists in the Long Island Sound; it's just not as common.

Elliot Sudal, a native of Burlington, likes to spearfish in Waterford’s Jordan Cove.

That’s where he finds flounder, skup, black sea bass and tautogs, to name a few.

There is no catch and release in spearfishing, so Sudal said you have to be sure you know what you’re shooting at is legal.

“Like okay one second, how big is this fish?  Okay, I think it's big enough, boom, and then it's gone, you have a second,” Sudal said. “There's a lot of intense fishing opportunities that I guess people don't realize other people are doing in Connecticut.”

The same rules of rod and real fishing in Connecticut apply to spearfishing.  That includes limits, size and season.
