WILLIMANTIC -- State Police said a Hartford man has died after an officer-involved shooting and a multi-town police chase.
The pursuit started in Norwich at 10:52 a.m. on Wednesday when Norwich police were called to investigate a suspicious incident. Police said when they attempted to stop Kyron Sands, he shot at them and fled onto I-395. Norwich police returned fire before the suspect took off.

During the pursuit, police said Sands, 39, tried to carjack multiple cars and was shooting at civilians. He eventually carjacked a car and police chased him into Willimantic.
State and Windham police used stop sticks to stop the car and when it came to a stop, Sands ran away from police on foot.
Officers said the suspect fired multiple shots at them. Police returned fire striking Sands in the abdomen. He was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead at Windham Hospital.

Willimantic, Norwich and State Police were all involved in the incident.
State Police say north and southbound lanes of Route 32 and Plains Road in Windham is closed, along with I-395 southbound between exits 21 and 18.
Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime detectives were requested by the State’s Attorney’s Office to assume the investigation of an officer involved shooting that occurred in this incident.
Criminal records show Sands had multiple felony convictions.
No police officers or civilians reported injuries
