WATERBURY — Connecticut State Police said they were called to the scene of an officer-involved shooting this afternoon.
State Police Troop A said they were alerted after Waterbury police shot an armed man around 4 p.m.
Waterbury Deputy Chief of Police Fred Spagnolo, said police came across a distraught individual carrying a shotgun at 60 Slocum Street near Holy Land in Waterbury. Spagnolo added that the man, Michael Veillette, 32, of Waterbury, was actively attempting to commit “suicide by cop.”
A standoff occurred between Veillette and several Waterbury police officers and during the standoff Veillette was shot in the abdomen by an officer. First aid was rendered to Veillette immediately and he was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. Veillette is currently in St. Mary’s Hospital in police custody and in stable condition.
Veillette has been charged with two counts of first-degree criminal attempt at assault, two counts of criminal attempt at assault on police officer, first-degree threatening, carrying a dangerous weapon, theft of a firearm and third-degree criminal trespass.
The use of force investigation regarding the officer involved shooting is being conducted by the Connecticut State Police.
