HARTFORD– A fire where a mother and her baby were rescued from their burning apartment building Wednesday night has been determined to be arson.
The fire started around 10 p.m. at the three-story building at 196 Sigourney St. There was heavy fire in the front stairwell on the second and third and floors.
The Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire to be arson. Police are investigating.
Firefighters put up a ladder and rescued the mother and baby from an upper story window as smoke poured out of the building. They were taken to the hospital along with a man who was blind. He was rescued along with his service dog.
Thirty adults and ten children were displaced in the incident.
