SHELTON–Two men were arrested after a theft from a charity bin.

On Saturday around 8 p.m. Shelton Police responded to 898 Bridgeport Ave. in Shelton Square to a charity called Kid-U-Cation after a witness reported that he saw two men take clothes from the bin and that they were in the process of loading the clothes into a van.

When police arrived they found a van packed with donated clothing from the bin. The drive was Joaquin Gonzales, 39, of Lindenhurst, New York. The passenger in the van was identified as Mardo Pineda, 23, of Copiague, New York. The men had no connection to the charity.

Police say there have been several thefts from that charity bin over the last few months.

Gonzales didn’t have a valid insurance card for the van or a valid license.

Gonzales was charged with larceny in the sixth degree, operating a vehicle with no insurance and operating a vehicle without a license. Pineda was charged with larceny in the sixth degree.

Both men were arrested and released on a promise to appear in court on April 27.
