STORS–A UConn fraternity has been banned after a series of events.

Pi Kappa Alpha, familiarly known as PIKE, was informed on Friday that the house would no longer be recognized by the school starting on March 13, 2015. The expulsion of the fraternity will last through at least May 5, 2019, though the fraternity can appeal the decision until Friday, March 20.

The fraternity was placed on probation while an investigation was ongoing into the fraternity’s alleged participation in an incident last fall at the “spirit rock.”

Specifically, the behavior that led to that probation was for disruptive behavior, bullying and/or harassment and violating the Rock Painting Policy. According to the Daily Campus, UConn’s student newspaper, members of the fraternity made sexist and racist comments to members of a campus sorority at the event.

PIKE appealed that decision, and the results will be revealed at some point this semester.

While on probation for that case, PIKE is said to have held two parties at which alcohol was served. This was in violation of both the university’s rules and the fraternity’s probation. Specifically, the fraternity was found to have violated the student code for endangering behavior, hazing and providing alcohol to minors.

Stephanie Reitz, the spokeswoman for UConn, said in a statement:

UConn’s zero-tolerance approach to behaviors that endanger others is emphasized clearly and consistently to all student leaders in Greek life and other organizations.

Our mission is to provide a first-rate learning environment, and we take this responsibility very seriously.

Fraternities, sororities, and other organizations play a vital and valuable role in the life of a great university — but UConn will not accept endangering behavior or flouting of the rules by anyone, under any circumstances.

Here is the sanction letter that was sent to the fraternity: PIKE Sanction Letter-March 2015.

In the past year the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Delta Gamma sorority, Delta Zeta sorority, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Sigma Chi fraternity all lost their registration and recognition at the school for various reasons, but most were related to alcohol.
