WEST HAVEN -- The University of New Haven is offering high school students from all over the state a chance to experience higher education in a fun way.
For the past four summers the Team Based Engineering and Manufacturing Camp has been offered to kids in ninth through twelfth grade, and this year, among their projects includes building drones.
Carnasciali added that building drones -- or quadcopters, as they prefer to call them -- offers campers an array of educational exposures.
"The quadcopters provide the chance to learn circuitry, programming, and also the aerodynamics of the blades."
Using 3-D printers and exotic software programs, the same used by Sikorsky engineers, the campers are able to build not just drones, but also build on their futures.
"To be able to build your own drone is pretty awesome," said Andres Sanchez, who will be an Oxford High School senior in the fall.
Patrick McGrath, a soon to be high school junior from Fairfield said, "This is preparing us for what we could potentially do and it is showing us how the industry works."
After the first drone took flight above the UNH quad, professor Carnasciali said, "The excitement that they get is really what drives it all."
The camp, which also has three students who traveled from China to take part, ends for the summer on Friday.
