PRESTON — Several aspects of a church in Preston were damaged around Christmas, and items were stolen.
According to State Police, sometime between when St. Catherine of Siena, a Roman Catholic church, closed at 11:30 a.m. on Christmas Day and reopened at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 28, several thousand dollars of damage was done.
At least one, and possibly two people forcibly entered the locked church, and inside broke a 3-foot statue of St. Catherine and several large and special candles for Easter and other important services.
Also, a six-inch bronze or brass cross was stolen. It also appears the vandal(s) tried to enter a room to find valuables, but that was unsuccessful.
Police would not comment if they had surveillance video, but are following up on a few leads.
