AVON — It’s been 10 years since a deadly crash on Avon Mountain and Wednesday the community there will hold a special service of remembrance.
At 7:15 a.m. victims and first responders were honored at the base of the mountain.
On July 29, 2005 four people died and 19 people were injured in a fiery crash. A large commercial dump truck that was filled with debris was heading west down the mountain on Route 44 when its brakes failed. The truck careened into a group of cars waiting for the light to turn green.
Four people were killed: Barbara Bongiovanni, 54, of Torrington, Maureen Edlund, 60, of Canton, Abdulraheem Naafi, 41, the driver of the truck, and Paul Stotler, 42, of New Hartford.
The Avon volunteer fire department, police department, and town officials started the service at 7:15 a.m. to mark the time of the crash in 2005. It included an Honor Guard, reading the names of the deceased, a prayer and benediction.
