WEST HARTFORD--With student loan debts growing astronomically, high school graduates could use an education in personal finances.

That's what a pair of high school students in West Hartford are striving for.

Armani Nieves from Hall High School and Danny Castillo from Conard High School have gathered hundreds of signatures on a petition to require a financial literacy class in order to graduate in West Hartford. The class would teach everything from savings plans to paying back student loans.

"We have to save and we have to educate ourselves financially," Castillo said.   Nieves added, "This has to be required, students really need to know this information."

To make financial literacy a mandatory class first a discussion with the district's assistant superintendent must be held before it can be brought up with the Board of Education.

At the very earliest, it would be a required class starting with the Class of 2018.
