NIANTIC — A woman who had been jail for five days died Thursday after being found with a ligature around her neck the previous evening.
The Connecticut Department of Correction said Monica Piette, 32, had entered York Correctional Institution in Niantic on December 16. During a routine check at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, corrections officers found Piette in her cell with a ligature tied to her neck. She was alone in the cell at the time. Staff members attempted to revive her and she was taken to local area hospital where she later passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Piette had been charged with criminal violation of a protective order and was being held on a bond of $92,500.
Officials said the exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death.
