WEST HARTFORD, Conn — Story by Kai Whalen, Hall High School
The Coral project teaches students about taking care of coral reefs and reef fish as well as the climate crisis in a hands-on learning environment.
The teacher of this club, Mr Wasley, expresses how much he wanted students to have access to coral reefs despite being far away from any naturally occurring coral. He started out with a small little coral tank in 2012 and got coral from others in the community, and now he has the 4050 gallon system you see today.
Mr. Wasley says that he doesn't want to expand the coral tank anymore than it is now but wants to give more back to the community.
Students like Cameron Shirley feel lucky to have the coral project to get experience working with these animals, and the coral tanks are very meaningful to many students, even those who don’t belong to the coral project because of how cool it looks in the halls.
The coral project also provides coral tanks to middle and elementary schools so they can have access to these animals starting from an earlier age, and give them coral grown from right here at hall.
Branching out into more schools helps teachers teach about the environment crisis and connect more to the animals that get affected from climate change.
