Local TV remains the heartbeat of the West Hartford community | FOX61 Student News

The passion that is exhibited within WHCI is the main driving force of why community media still matters today.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Story by David O'Connor, Conard High School

With so much information available to us, it is hard to find a good source for what is happening within your town.

Thankfully, West Hartford  has West Hartford Community Interactive, or WHCI for short. WHCI is a community television station, broadcasting in house studio shows and documentation of local events specifically for the town of West Hartford.

Run by Jennifer Evans, WHCI has been adapting to the decline in cable viewership by uploading content to their website & Youtube channel, as well as hosting raffles that encourage people to donate to the non-profit group. And with media becoming increasingly commercial, it is imperative that we view community media such as WHCI through a humanitarian lens.

Jennifer Evans says that, "This is a totally different kind of media. It's not about the money. It's not about how many people watch it.  It's about the user experience. It's a laboratory, it's a class."

The passion that is exhibited within WHCI is the main driving force of why community media still matters today. Having this outlet for open communications and free speech will allow people to gain insight on their town and to have an accessible way to look back on West Hartford's history.

The FOX 61 Student News program empowers Connecticut middle and high school students to explore the world of multi-media journalism by giving them the opportunity to capture, edit and publish original content under the guidance of industry professionals.
