WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Story by Khushi Grover Hall High School
In high schools all over the nation, the senior crowded hallways are common, but at Hall High School, there are some unwelcome sights.
Over the past year, the whole community has experienced racially charged incidents, including derogatory graffiti in the bathrooms leading to them being closed and the posting of unauthorized fliers with potential anti-Semitic language.
To find out more, we talked to Daniel Zittoun, the principal of the high school, who gave his opinion as to why students commit these acts.
To get further insight, we interviewed Teresa Rangel, the executive director of equity management for West Hartford Public Schools. She dove into what they are trying to do to make the community more understandable and welcoming.
However some students and faculty at Hall think that these interventions aren’t enough. So, we spoke to the teacher advisor of the Jewish Student Union, Joshua Satlof, and student Amani Snellings, an outspoken member of multiple equity clubs at school, and asked for their thoughts.
Joshua Satlof spoke about what the school needed to address, “consequences or restorative justice or education”, stating his belief that the School isn’t handling the incidents well.
Amani Snellings talked about her experience and feelings towards these actions- and what she wanted the school to do, “I'm not saying I want the problem to be fully resolved by the time that I graduate.. I just want to see something different than what's happening.”
