HAMDEN, Connecticut — Story by Daniel Cattelan, Hall High School
Gamers from all over the state come to compete for the title of champions.
Quinnipiac University hosts the annual CIAC e-sports tournament with games including Rocket League, Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros.
The e-sports field has been growing rapidly as the games become more popular with high schools and colleges. The divide between athletic competitions and esports have been controversial for years, but Quinnipiac treats them the same.
Cherese Odukwe, the CAS-CIAC Director of Student Activities, and Mike Medina, the Director of Recreation at Quinnipiac University, share their insight on the significance of this tournament and the place of e-sports in competitive sports.
“So the major goal for playing the e-sports Championship each and every season is to provide e-sports students with the same opportunities that we provide for all of our sanctioned CIAC sports. We want to provide an experience for them to be highlighted and to come and celebrate all of the hard work that they've done all season.” Odukwe said.
“We love being able to host and have high school students come to our campus to see everything that Quinnipiac has to offer. Being able to be the overseer of sports allows me to see students in a competitive manner that they're really passionate about and they enjoy being a part of this really trending and nationally recognized program.” Medina said.
Quinnipiac plans to host this tournament annually.
