WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Story by Daniel Cattelan, Hall High School
Every Halloween, neighborhoods around the country decorate their homes with ghosts, goblins and skeletons. Meanwhile, Matt Warshauer in West Hartford is busy making a display that showcases a different kind of monster.
“You know, I think it's a lot of fun. I think part of it is that I enjoy doing it. I like working with my hands. I'm a political historian, so this allows me to mix my love of Halloween with politics. But it's also I think really, honestly, to some extent, become a little bit of a responsibility,” said Warshauer.
“I mean, I talk to so many people during the year in the off Halloween time, when they find out that I'm the one who does this and they're like, Oh my God, I look forward to this every year,”
Everything from Skee-Ball to feats of strength and funhouse mirrors. He even garners issues with people from across the country.
“Oh yeah. I've had in past years. Not so much this year yet, but in past years I've had threats. I've had people email me and call me and leave messages on my work phone saying that I'm lucky that nobody will burn my house down,” said Warshauer.
He finds Halloween to be hauntingly fun. “Honestly, at Halloween I feel like I can get away with a little bit that I wouldn't be able to get away with at a different time of year. Right?”
“People want to have the spectacle of a crazy, scary Halloween, and I can slip in a little bit of politics into it, and I don't know that I can do that at every other time of the year,” said Warshauer.
