Woman struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in Middletown

The crash happened in the area of Washington Street right near Wesleyan University

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — MIDDLETOWN- A woman was hit and killed while crossing the street in Middletown, just after 9 o’clock Wednesday night. Police identified her as 41-year-old Brooke Rich of Middletown.

Police say the driver, who they believe is a man in a dark colored four door sedan, took off. It happened at the busy intersection of High Street and Route 66. Residents say they’ve been in dangerous situations there themselves.

"I almost got hit the other day crossing the street," said Bob Santangelo, who lives nearby. "I got across three of the four lanes, and at the fourth lane closest to the curb, a car just went zooming right in front of me," he said.

He says, he's always cautious during his morning walks.

"People are always in a hurry to get somewhere. The light will turn yellow, the light turning yellow does not mean accelerate and that’s what you see," said Santangelo.

He says he always waits at the crosswalks, stays on the sidewalks and wears bright colors.

"Visibility is what’s important. I normally come out early in the morning when it’s still dark, that’s why you see the reflective tape on my jacket and everything else," he said.

The crash happened right outside of Wesleyan University’s campus. Students who cross that intersection every day, say they’re also mindful.

"In the mornings I definitely always press the crosswalk, wait there for you know a minute or two," said Thomas Mckenzie-Smith, a sophomore at the school.

Middletown police say they’re now looking for a second car who may have also hit the woman. They are asking anyone with information to give them a call.
