HARTFORD, Conn. — A group of demonstrators rallied outside of Aetna and United Health in Hartford Wednesday morning calling on insurance companies to put people over profits.
The group held signs and marched from Farmington Ave. to Asylum Street, urging the companies to reverse denied claims for coverage by patients across the state.
One demonstrator said her insulin is no longer covered and she can't afford the medication without help moving forward.
"I’m a Type I diabetic, I’ve had to ration insulin before because of insurance costs and most recently I’ve been denied another diabetes medication, it would be another $1200 every three weeks," said Kristen Whitney Daniels from Shelton.
Demonstrators said the companies focus on making massive amounts of money while people are suffering.
This comes after the state launched Array-RX, a discount prescription card.
Demonstrators said that program just puts a Band-Aid over a bigger issue.
"The way it was designed was to make money not to provide healthcare. You shouldn’t have to look for discounts, the medicine should be a reasonable price and your insurance should pay for it," said Phil Brewer of Milford.
The protest was part of a nationwide effort to call on insurance companies to stop massive profit margins and focus on the care people need.
There are more than a dozen events scheduled across the country to highlight the same message.
