GLASTONBURY, Conn. — The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced that the historic Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry will open after several weeks of delays due to sustained high water levels.
The two ferries across the Connecticut River will now be in service and are expected to open on Saturday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m. and run until Nov. 30.
Typically the ferry season in Connecticut runs from April 1 through November 30.
Pedestrians, cyclists, and cars are welcome on both ferries. Motorists who use the ferry can cut 16 round-trip miles from their commute using the ferry, reducing their carbon footprint.
According to the DOT last year, the Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry carried more than 14,000 vehicles and nearly 34,000 passengers.
The Rocky Hill-Glastonbury Ferry is the oldest continuously operating ferry in America, which started service in 1655. The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry was launched in 1769.
The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry has been running since April 1.
