CONNECTICUT, USA — A phone scam targeted residents in Connecticut, Virginia and New Jersey using a Hartford Judicial District telephone line, according to State's Attorney Sharmese Walcott.
Residents reported that the caller identified themselves as "Investigator," "Special Agent" and "Special Agent Stacey Moy," according to Walcott.
The caller would claim that the recipient of the call is part of a human trafficking, prostitution or general investigation and needed to pay money through the Zelle cash app to prevent spending time in jail.
Walcott said those contacted recognized the scam and quickly hung up, but callers may be attempting to solicit money from other residents in Connecticut and on the East Coast.
The Hartford State's Attorney's Office does not contact residents by phone to discuss investigations or demand payment. Walcott said anyone who receives a suspicious call from the number 860-566-3190 should hang up immediately.
Anyone looking to report suspicious activity or other concerns can contact Connecticut State Police at 860-685-8190 and select 8, Walcott said.
