Milford residents pause holiday cheer ahead of severe weather

Their holiday cheer will be met with high winds, rain, and potential flooding late Sunday into Monday morning as severe weather is expected.

MILFORD, Conn. — People who call Milford home pride themselves on being very festive this time of year when it comes to holiday decorations.

“We love to see smiles and we love to see people just enjoy it and it’s nice to see people drive by really slow,” said Monica Bartolomao.

Their holiday cheer will be met with high winds, rain, and potential flooding late Sunday into Monday morning as severe weather is expected to sweep across the state, but especially near the shoreline.

“It’s more of the winds here. The flooding isn’t too bad. We’re a little bit further away from the ocean at the end of the block. We get a little into the garage, but it’s more of the winds,” said Bob Asmussen.

To prepare for these storms and strong winds, they secure their décor with things like bungee cables and rope.

“It’s too hard to put everything up and take everything down. So, we try to put everything up appropriately that can handle December, and January storms and hope for the best,” said Asmussen.

As numerous cities across the state are preparing for severe weather, sending out preparation alerts, Eversource is also preparing.

“We have brought in additional out-of-state crews and have pre-positioned lined, as well as tree crews throughout the state so they can respond as quickly and as safely as possible if there is any damage that comes up on this system from this storm,” said Jamie Ratliff.

Here are ways that you can prepare at home too.

  • Do not drive through flooded roadways – instead, turn around and choose a different route.
  • Ensure your vehicle is not parked in a low-lying area.
  • Remove leaves away from storm drains to reduce the possibility of flooding.
  • Ensure your phone and other electronics are charged in case the power goes out.
