CONNECTICUT, USA — The northeastern-regional grocery chain Stop & Shop will make "difficult decisions" to close "select underperforming store locations," the company said Wednesday.
There is currently no word on which locations will be impacted by the closures or when they will be happening.
Parent company Ahold Delhaize's Chief Executive Officer JJ Fleeman made an initial announcement about the closings at the company's Strategy Day on May 23.
"Stop & Shop is focusing on the markets that are most important, including those where the brand has strong density, holds a strong market position, or has stores that are performing well," Fleeman said. "Stop & Shop has already evaluated its overall portfolio and will make difficult decisions to close underperforming stores to create a healthy store base for the long-term and grow the brand."
Stop & Shop currently has 88 locations in Connecticut, among its 397 stores including New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
"We've completed more than 190 remodels to date, which continue to perform well, and we're committed to continuing to invest in our stores - as well in our prices - to deliver a great in-store experience and great values for our customers," a Stop & Shop spokesperson said in a statement.
Fleeman said in the Strategy Day announcement that Ahold plans to expand on the company's existing stores across the United States, including Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant and Hannaford.
"Over the next four years, we'll increase brand strength and density by remodeling and or adding more than 1,000 stores," Fleeman said.
