CONNECTICUT, USA — Stop & Shop temporarily closed their delis Tuesday as Boar's Head expanded their nationwide deli meat recall due to the potential presence of a dangerous bacteria known as listeria.
According to a Stop & Shop spokesperson, the deli meat company informed them of the expanded recall to include all products produced from the Boar's Head facility in Jarrett, Va., prompting stores to close the delis for "deep cleaning and sanitization."
All impacted products have been removed from the stores, and all other deli meats and cheeses that may have been affected by cross-contamination were discarded, the spokesperson said.

The expansion comes less than a week after the initial deli meat recall was announced, leading to a deep cleaning and clearing of shelves at Big Y and Stop & Shop stores. Possible listeria contamination also led to nearly 20 kinds of vegetables, sold between July 5-12, being recalled at Aldi, Kroger and Walmart locations across the U.S., including Connecticut; more information on that can be found here.
According to the CDC, listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious illness or death and is especially dangerous for pregnant women and the elderly. More information about listeria can be found here.
All customers who purchased any impacted Boar's Head products are recommended to discard them and are eligible for a full refund, according to the Stop & Shop website. Customers who purchased products in the store can get a refund by visiting the store, and those who purchased them online for pick-up or delivery can call customer service for a refund at 1-800-767-7772.
Stop & Shop said that anyone who purchased in-store sliced deli meats and cheese products before July 30, including online and in-person orders, is encouraged to discard them "out of an abundance of caution, due to the risk of cross-contamination." According to their website, any deli items purchased before July 30 are eligible for a full refund.
Customers who purchased the affected products are also asked by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service to clean their refrigerators to lower the risk of cross-contamination. Anyone feeling ill as a result of consuming any of the products should contact their health care provider immediately.
