NEW YORK (PIX11) – Garlic powder possibly tainted with salmonella has forced the recall of dozens of products that used the spice.
The garlic powder was made by Frontier Co-op and tested positive for the bacteria during a test by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the company said this week.
As many as 39 products that used the garlic powder are being recalled, from beans to broth, dip mix, taco seasoning and gravy, the company said. They were sold in all 50 states and marketed under the brand names Simply Organic, Whole Foods Market and Frontier.
No illnesses have been connected with the recall, the company said.
Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomitting and abdominal pain. The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly or others with weakened immune systems.
They can be identified using a four-digit lot code, found on the front label directly above the UPC code on foil bulk packages or on the bottom of bottled items. On seasoning mixes, that lot code is embossed on the right side of the packet.
Anyone who has these products should throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. Questions can be directed to 1-800-669-3275.
