HARTFORD, Conn — This year, Sales Tax-Free Week is Sunday, August 18, through Saturday, August 24.
The state said that sales or purchases of certain items of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 per item are exempt from sales tax.
This special exemption applies to purchases made from retailers located in Connecticut and online retailers.
Most pieces of clothing and footwear are exempt, and sales tax shouldn't be charged. Here's a detailed list: Examples of Clothing or Footwear That Are Exempt When Sold for Less Than $100 During Sales Tax-Free Week. The exceptions include items for protection worn during athletic practice or competition.
Sales tax on items like jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, and watches will be charged.
Officials said the $100 limit applies to purchases of clothing and footwear priced for $100 or less. If an item is priced for more than $100, the sales tax applies to the entire selling price.
According to the state's website, "If a retailer offers 'buy one, get one free' promotion, the $100 limit applies to each item. However, the two prices cannot be averaged to qualify both items for not being subject to sales tax. For example, if a customer buys one item at $150 and receives another item for free, the item that costs $150 would be fully subject to sales tax.
The final purchase price for the item, including discounts and coupons, determines whether the item is less than $100. For example, if the item is $110 and is marked down 10%, the final sale price is $99 so it would qualify. However reductions due to rebates do not qualify.
This special exemption applies to purchases made from retailers located in Connecticut as well as from on-line retailers.
This year will be Connecticut's 24th Sales Tax-Free Week.
