HARTFORD -- This week we've been dealing with terribly cold winter weather. Thankfully, there hasn't been any measurable snow falling with these bone-chilling temperatures.
This week marks 19 years since a major blizzard swept through New England. Nearly 20 inches of snow fell on Connecticut on Sunday, January 7, 1996.
Many schools were closed for more than one day.
Three days after the storm, Hartford was $100,000 over its $400,000 snow-removal budget. The state DOT spent $14.5 million, most of its $17.4 million budget.
1996 was a bad year in general for snow. Meteorologist Joe Furey said that 115 inches of snow fell on Connecticut that Winter.
