COVENTRY, Conn. — Editor's Note: Coventry police have since updated the information that they provided on March 10, including that the dog's death was not caused by gunshot wounds. A new article with updated details on the investigation can be found here.
Coventry police are investigating after a dog was found dead on March 2, the department said on its Facebook page.
Officers were called to South Street in the area of Route 6 after it was reported a dead dog was inside a plastic bin on the side of the road.
When police arrived, they found a dark gray female Pit bull with white paws, around 50-55 pounds, and cropped ears. Police said it also appeared that she had recently given birth to puppies.
Police also discovered that the dog had a gunshot wound to her chest and appeared to have been left at that location for several days before she was discovered.
The dog's death and abandonment are under investigation, and police are looking for surveillance video anyone may have of the area.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Coventry Police Department at 860-742-7331 and ask for Officer Kruoff. The department said callers can remain anonymous if they wish.
Desmond's Army Animal Law Advocates and Army's Legacy Animal Rescue and Sanctuary said Sunday that they are offering a combined total reward of $10,000, after initially offering an amount of $4,500, for information leading to an arrest in this case.
