RHAM school district employee fired for using district funds for 'personal benefit'

The RHAM superintendent said that the district is 'fully cooperating' with an ongoing police investigation.

HEBRON, Conn. — The Region 8, or RHAM, school district administration fired an employee for using the district's funds for "personal benefit," according to Superintendent Colin McNamara Wednesday.

In a letter to the district community on Aug. 22, McNamara said that the employee was in charge of ordering materials and supplies for the district and appeared to be using for the funds for those purchases for their own benefit.

After an internal investigation that led to the employee's firing, district administration contacted local and state police, according to McNamara. The district is cooperating with an ongoing police investigation.

"While boards of education have systems in place for fiscal oversight, employees with an understanding of those systems can, at times, exploit their position for their own personal gain," McNamara said. "Unfortunately, like other towns and school districts across the state, Regional School District 8 has fallen victim to this scenario."

McNamara added that the district worked with a forensic auditor to create a "more enhanced system of checks and balances" for ordering district supplies and materials.

"We take such fiduciary obligations very seriously and we will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to help ensure district funds are used appropriately," McNamara said.
