STORRS, Conn. — A fraternity at UConn has been suspended and was ordered to shut down after its former chapter president was arrested by campus police and state police for assault after a hazing incident last semester.
David Vallejo, 23, was arrested last week by state police and was arrested by UConn police on Tuesday on allegations of assault and strangulation.
The university said that Vallejo was previously the chapter president of Lambda Theta Phi, whose term in that role ended in December. The chapter will remain suspended during an ongoing investigation.
On March 21, Vallejo allegedly held his forearm across the victim's neck, choking them, campus police said. For that incident, Vallejo was charged with disorderly conduct, assault and strangulation.
A state police investigation found that Vallejo threw the victim, a fraternity recruit, across the room several times and choked them after making them do push-ups in February. The incident was reported to both UConn and state police.
Vallejo was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 21.
