VERNON, Conn. — Vernon police have charged a man for a pedestrian crash in June that left an 81-year-old woman dead and an 83-year-old man with serious injuries.
Police said they arrested Stephen Lewis, 34, of Manchester on November 27. He faces charges of assault in the second degree, misconduct with a motor vehicle, distracted driving, and failure to exercise reasonable care when near a vulnerable user on a public way.
Lewis was held in lieu of a $75,000 bond and appeared in Rockville Superior Court on Nov. 27, according to police.
At 9:30 a.m. on June 12, police responded to a crash on Warren Avenue after involving two pedestrians.
The collision happened "where the Rockville Spur section of the Vernon Rails-to-Trails crosses over Warren Avenue," police said.
Arriving officers found a woman and a man lying in the roadway of Warren Avenue. Vernon EMS and the town fire department provided medical treatment to both at the scene.
Responders brought the two pedestrians to Hartford Hospital, where the woman later died of her injuries. Police identified her as Anna Krocheski, 81, of Tolland.
The man, identified as an 83-year-old from Tolland, had serious injuries, police said.
Investigators found a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan facing east in the middle of the roadway which appeared to be involved. The driver, identified as Lewis, was not injured and cooperated in the investigation, police said.
