HARTFORD, Conn — The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art was awarded a $1.2 million grant by the nonprofit, Art Bridges Foundation as part of a national $40 million Access for All initiative, a program meant to encourage people to return to museums following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The grant will give Wadsworth the opportunity to offer free access hours through several programs for the next three years.
The museum will also bring back its popular monthly Thursday evenings with free admission and programming beginning in January 2024. Funding will also be used to promote and sustain the Wadsworth Welcome program, established in 2016, which offers free admission to Hartford residents. It will also allow Wadsworth to extend free hours to the entire day during monthly Second Saturdays for Families events.
“We are tremendously grateful to Art Bridges for making it possible for us to serve a broader audience in the Greater Hartford area and beyond. We’ve been listening to our communities and hope that these initiatives will draw more guests to come to experience what Wadsworth has to offer. It is our hope that these free access opportunities will continue to bring new audiences to the museum to enjoy our collections, exhibitions, and programming for all ages,” said Jeffrey Brown, President & CEO of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in a statement.
The museum joins other recipients in Connecticut and across the country such as the New Britain Museum of American Art, Mattatuck Museum, Fairfield University Art Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Cincinnati Art Museum, Yellowstone Museum of Art, and San Diego Museum of Art.
