THOMPSON, Conn — A woman in her 60s died in a house fire in Thompson on Thursday morning.

The West Thompson Fire Department responded to a home on Fabyan Road in North Grosvenordale for a fire just before 8 a.m.

Two of the three people inside had to jump from the second-floor window to escape. They had minor injuries, firefighters said. The first arriving officer and a Connecticut state trooper tried to rescue a third person but were unsuccessful because of the intensity of the fire.

The homeowner, identified as Geralyn Ricci, 67, was unable to escape and died, officials said.

A firefighter hurt their ankle while responding to the fire and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.

The Southbridge, Mass., Fire Department also responded to the fire and said finding water was a challenge for this call.

"These fires in rural settings prove to be difficult due to lack of hydrant systems," Southbridge FD said on social media. "Water had to be drafted from a nearby pond for firefighting operations."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this fire is asked to call the Thompson Fire Marshal's office at 860-931-6299.
