THOMPSON, Conn — An adult was found dead in the home of a "suspicious" house fire in Thompson that left another person seriously burned, Connecticut State Police said.
Reports of explosions rocked Quaddick Town Farm Road late Wednesday night. The result was a home and detached garage that were burned to the ground. Only the steps and chimney remain.
East Thompson and East Putnam firefighters and Connecticut State Police responded to the home just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
"I saw the trucks and then I could smell the smoke like something was burning so then I thought maybe somebody went off the road because I never would have thought that a house was on fire," Thompson resident Steven Larrow said.
A man was found about 200 feet into the woods of the property overnight, state police said. He was seriously burned and was taken to an area hospital by a Life Flight helicopter that landed at nearby Quaddick State Park. The full extent of his injuries is unknown.
Authorities confirmed the man was one of the owners of the home.
In an update at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, state police said an adult body was found in the home and was brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. They have not been identified at this time.
The State Police Fire and Explosives Unit took over the investigation of the fire which is believed to be "suspicious." They brought in the Major Crimes Squad and closed the road. It will remain closed until Friday.
"A direction that we travel every day to go to and from the stores," town resident Maryland Sheridan said.
Google Earth images show what the nicely manicured home looked like before the blaze. Neighbors said an older couple lived there.
"The house was very nice. Well kept," said Larrow. "They had a nice barn and had a recreation room above it with a deck that came out. My wife and I walk by there quite often and they were outside pulling weeds and cleaning up the yard and that kind of stuff."
