WINDHAM, Conn. — The CH Barrows STEM Academy in Windham will be closed Friday after firefighters tackled a vehicle fire nearby, school officials announced.
The vehicle fire has been put out, but around 7:15 a.m., the fire marshal directed school administrators to close the school for the day, the superintendent said in a pop-up message on the Windham Public School's website.
Connecticut State Police confirmed there was a truck fire in the area.
"This does not impact any schools other than Barrows. All other district schools are open today," Superintendent Tracy Youngberg said in the message.
Students that were already at the school were picked up by buses and brought back to their bus stops. Parents were advised to pick up their children at the bus stop, as bus drivers will not leave children unattended.
"We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes, but student and staff safety is our top priority," Youngberg said.
There are no road closures in the area at this time, according to Connecticut State Police.
The cause of the truck fire is not known at this time.
This is a developing story.
