WASHINGTON — A voluntary recall has been issued for certain Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition baby formula over concerns it may be contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall Sunday.
Affected products include select batches of Nutramigen Powder, a specialty infant formula for the dietary management of Cows Milk Allergy in babies, sold in 12.6 and 19.8 oz cans.
The company said there was a possibility of Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria contamination in products sampled outside the U.S., although no illnesses have been reported.
No samples from the U.S. have been found to be contaminated, according to the FDA.
The affected containers were manufactured in June 2023 and sold primarily over the summer. Because the remaining stock is limited, federal officials say they believe most of the affected products have already been consumed, with no reports of illness or adverse events.
The bacteria can cause life-threatening infections or meningitis, especially among infants or young children. Symptoms include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, yellow skin and eyes, grunting breathing and abdominal movements. The bacteria can also cause bowel damage or spread through the blood to damage other parts of the body.
The following recalled product batch codes and can size associated with each batch were distributed in the U.S.:
- ZL3FHG (12.6 oz cans);
- ZL3FMH (12.6 oz cans);
- ZL3FPE (12.6 oz cans);
- ZL3FQD (12.6 oz cans);
- ZL3FRW (19.8 oz cans); and
- ZL3FXJ (12.6 oz cans).
The products have a UPC Code of 300871239418 or 300871239456 and “Use By Date” of “1 Jan 2025”. No other U.S. distributed Nutramigen batches or other Reckitt products are impacted.
Customers who believe they may have purchased some of the affected product can check the bottom of the can to identify if it is included in the recall.
