BOSTON — A Connecticut man received a one year, one day sentence on Thursday for evading taxes on income he earned as a commercial fisherman in Massachusetts, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Brian Kobus, of Durham, worked as a commercial fisherman and deckhand for multiple fishing companies in Massachusetts, according to court documents and statements made in court, which said that Kobus was paid by check after each fishing trip.
Prosecutors said that Kobus received over $1.2 million in fishing income between 2011 and 2013, and 2017 through 2021, but he never filed a federal income tax return or paid the taxes he owed during those periods.
Kobus concealed the source and disposition of his income from the Internal Revenue Service by regularly cashing his paychecks from the fishing companies and using the money to fund his personal lifestyle, according to prosecutors.
The DOJ said that Kobus caused a total tax loss to the IRS of around $377,839.
Beyond his prison sentence, Kobus was ordered by a U.S. District Court judge to serve one year of supervised release and pay $377,839 in restitution to the United States.
The IRS Criminal Investigation unit is investigating the case.
