HARTFORD, Conn. — A man from Secaucus, N.J. pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court on Wednesday to theft of mail, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Prosecutors said that Ixavier Holman, Jr., 33, used postal keys to steal mail from USPS collection boxes at post offices in New Haven and West Haven.
Court documents and statements made in court revealed that at least eight times between December 2022 and June 2023, Holman used stolen mail collection box keys to steal mail from the blue collection boxes at these post offices.
Holman reportedly stole from the collection boxes at the post offices located at 95 Fountain St. in New Haven, 589 Campbell Ave. in West Haven and 844 Jones Hill Rd. in West Haven.
Police took Holman into custody on June 12, 2023, after he returned to the Fountain Street post office in West Haven and accessed the collecting box to steal mail, prosecutors said. When he was caught, Holman had two mail collection box keys on his person.
Prosecutors said that a search of Holman’s residence found more than 3,000 pieces of stolen mail, USPS mail collection bins, a credit card reader and an embosser. Included among the stolen mail were thousands of checks and money orders, separated and organized by bank, with a face value of over $1.5 million.
Theft of mail could land Holman in prison for up to five years. His sentencing is scheduled for March 12. Holman is currently released on bond pending sentencing.
According to prosecutors, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the West Haven and New Haven Police Departments conducted the investigation.
