HARTFORD, Conn. — Over recent years, many "national" days have been recognized across the U.S. Tuesday was one civic holiday local and federal government branches are putting on the top of their lists.
It's National Voter Registration Day, recognized on Sept. 20th, 2022, and in Connecticut, it was celebrated at The Old State House.
This civic holiday was first observed nationally in 2012, and it has been gaining momentum ever since. So far, nearly 4.7 million people have used this day to register to vote – which is the whole point.
It's all a good reminder ahead of the general election, which is just around the corner on Nov. 8th.
Here in Connecticut, voters have up until seven days before the election to register to vote, but local election officials say the earlier you do it, the better.
“Everybody, whether you register as Republican, Democrat, unaffiliated, Independent Party, Working Families Party, Green Party, you never know when your vote may matter and may tip the scales and balance in your own voter district," said State Rep. Matt Ritter, (D) Speaker of the House.
"Government by representative democracy just doesn’t happen. It requires the people to be actively engaged. It requires the people to Participate," Mark Kohler, (D) Secretary of the State of Connecticut.
Also part of the celebration was recognizing recipients of the NASS (the National Association of Secretaries of State) medallion award. Which are meant to showcase people who have gone above and beyond to stay committed to voter and civic education.
One more thing they want all voters to remember? On the ballot this November, voters will see an option to implement early voting in Connecticut.
