HARTFORD, Conn. — The primary elections for local, state and federal office positions that represent Connecticut is taking place Tuesday, Aug. 13.
The polls opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.
Here's a look at some of the big primary elections happening in Connecticut:
A U.S. Senate seat to represent Connecticut is up for election. Sen. Chris Murphy has held the seat and kept it blue since 2013.
Two candidates are vying to be the Republican nominee in the race. Whoever wins the primary will challenge Murphy in the November election.
Beacon Falls First Selectman Gerry Smith received the GOP party's early nomination. He's focusing on immigration enforcement and the opioid crisis.
Matthew Corey, a businessman, is calling for business-friendly representation in Congress.
The state's fourth congressional district is also up for election. Two candidates are running to be the Republican nominee.
Michael Goldstein, of Greenwich, is mostly focused on health care policy and costs.
Bob MacGuffie, of Fairfield, is outspoken about cutting down foreign aid.
Whoever wins the primary will go up against incumbent Congressman Jim Himes in November, who has held the office since 2009.
Many other races, mainly state senate and state representative, are holding primaries as well. See all the races below and check back for real-time results after the polls close. Results will also appear here.
