CONNECTICUT, USA — As the nation prepares for one of its most significant presidential elections in generations, Connecticut voters should be aware they will also be asked an important local question when filling out their ballots.

A proposed amendment to the state’s constitution is featured on Connecticut ballots this election cycle, asking residents if they believe absentee voting is a right that should be extended to all eligible voters without the current limitations.

Entering this election, Connecticut law only allows voters to receive an absentee ballot if an absence from their town or city on Election Day prevents them from appearing at their polling place. For instance, many college students vote using this method. Absentee ballots can also be permitted for residents who are unable to appear at their assigned polling place on Election Day due to sickness, physical disability, active military service or religious beliefs.

If the amendment is approved during this voting cycle, the state constitution would no longer limit the reasons why absentee voting may be used. It would expand the state legislature’s authority to pass laws regarding voting by qualified voters who won’t appear at their polling place on Election Day.

In accordance with the sixth article of the Connecticut State Constitution, the proposed amendment was approved by the General Assembly.

According to the state, “if a majority of the electors voting on the proposed amendment approve it, the amendment will become part of the state constitution.”
