Danbury mayor-elect flips the city blue after 3 decades of GOP control

Roberto Alves claimed victory over his opponents, including 1-term incumbent, Republican Mayor Dean Esposito.

DANBURY, Conn — The new mayor-elect for the city of Danbury will be the first Democrat to hold the city’s highest position in more than 30 years.

Roberto Alves claimed victory over his opponents, including 1-term incumbent, Republican Mayor Dean Esposito.

Alves received 7,180 votes while Esposito received 7,086 votes, with 100% of the precincts reporting.

The Connecticut Democrats celebrated the win on social media, saying Alves securing the mayoral race was a “major pickup for Democrats.”

“Congrats to Roberto and the whole Danbury team,” the group posted on X, formally known as Twitter.

Alves was also the candidate for the Working Class Party, who congratulated him on winning the election and “putting an end to more than two decades of Republican control.”

“We are ecstatic to see Roberto elected," said Sarah Ganong, WFP State Director. ¨He offers a new vision for Danbury that has working families at its center, building a city for everyone, not just the privileged few. His victory opens a new era for the city, a chance to build a more vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive Danbury. And we´re thrilled Danbury voters saw through the opposition´s scare tactics centered on the WFP endorsement and chose the vision Roberto represents.”

Prior to becoming mayor, Esposito served as a city councilman for five terms and as town clerk from 2003 to 2005. He last served as Chief of Staff to former Mayor Joseph Cavo.
