CONNECTICUT, USA — Chris Murphy is facing off this election season against Manchester businessman Matt Corey in a race for the U.S. Senate.

Murphy, who is running for his third term in the Senate, has been in public office since the late 1990s. After serving in the Connecticut General Assembly, he ran for Congress and won from the fifth district. Six year later, he ran for U.S. Senate in 2012, succeeding Joe Lieberman. A little more than a month after the election, 26 teachers and students were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary school, which was in his congressional district.

Corey, who grew up in Manchester, served in the U.S. Navy, according to his campaign website. At first deploying to Beirut in 1983 he served in the Navy until 1987, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Since that time, he has had several businesses including local restaurants and a window cleaning company.

The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Murphy has been a major voice in reforming gun laws. He has advocated for measures that would keep guns out from people convicted of domestic abuse, encouraging licensing requirements for handguns and limits on military-style assault weapons.

Corey’s position in the race is to put Connecticut first. He is a proponent of immigration reform, including deporting migrants who commit crimes and finishing the border wall. He favors Peace through strength, supporting Israel and putting an end to what he views as coddling Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. He also supports unequivocal support for law enforcement and tougher penalties for fentanyl and so-called designer drug trafficking.

Robert Hyde, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, is the Cheaper Gas Groceries Party. Justin Paglino, a graduate of Brown and Yale Universities, is the Green Party candidate.
