CONNECTICUT, USA — The race for Connecticut’s 3rd district is on between incumbent Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D) and Republican challenger Michael Massey.
Connecticut’s 3rd district is centered around New Haven and includes areas surrounding the city, extending into parts of Middlesex and Fairfield counties as well as most of New Haven County.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D) - Incumbent
DeLauro was first elected to represent Connecticut's 3rd district in 1991 and held the seat ever since.
While in Congress, DeLauro serves as a ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee and sits on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. DeLauro is also a ranking member of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, which oversees the country’s investments in education, health, and employment.
DeLauro also belongs to 62 House caucus groups and is the co-chair of the Baby Caucus, the Long Island Sound Caucus, and the Food Safety Caucus.
DeLauro believes in raising the federal minimum wage, giving employees access to paid sick days, allowing employees to take paid family and medical leave, and ensuring equal pay for equal work.
At the heart of her work is her “fight for America’s working families,” she stated on her website. DeLauro supports tax cuts for working and middle-class families, expanding the Child Tax Credit and introducing the Young Child Tax Credit to “give families with young children an economic lift.”
DeLauro also believes in improving and expanding the federal support for childhood nutrition and modernizing our food safety.
As for reproductive healthcare, DeLauro believes in women’s right to reproductive rights and supports increasing access to safe medical care for pregnant women.

Michael Massey (R)
Michael Massey is DeLauro’s challenger on the ballot.
Massey, according to his website, has centered his campaign around the “unique challenges faced by urban areas, particularly those controlled by Democrats.” While explaining his journey, Massey said he grew up with “limited resources” and few positive role models in his life. Ultimately, he wound up incarcerated for “various offenses.”
While incarcerated, Massey became “inspired by the Republican party” and Donald Trump. Massey went on a journey of “self-discovery and political awakening,” he said on his website.
Massey supports incentivizing “the culture we want to see” to combat inner city issues, saying using money to help a broken home life, failing schools, and to combat crime and joblessness would ultimately be cheaper in the long run than “prison” and “failure.” Massey said this would be done through legislation.
When it comes to reproductive healthcare, Massey said medically needed abortion needed to be federally protected. He emphasizes that money is a “big reason for abortion” and that by helping pregnant women and ending “policies that keep fathers away,” families will feel more supported.
